Each parent working in Luxembourg can take parental leave with a replacement income paid by the CAE — full-time, part-time or split. Here are the options, the conditions and the current amounts.
Luxembourg's parental leave is among the most flexible in Europe: each parent has an individual right to leave for every child, with a genuine replacement income paid by the Caisse pour l'avenir des enfants (CAE).
First parental leave must be taken by one parent immediately following maternity or adoption leave. The second parental leave can be taken by the other parent at any point before the child's 6th birthday. Cross-border workers insured in Luxembourg share the exact same rights.
| Format | Duration | Employer's Agreement Needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time leave | 4 or 6 months | No (statutory right of the employee) |
| Part-time leave (50 %) | 8 or 12 months (requires working ≥20 hrs/week) | Yes |
| Split leave | 4 periods of 1 month, or 1 day per week over up to 20 months | Yes |
The allowance is a replacement income calculated on your average monthly gross income over the 12 months preceding the leave. For full-time leave after full-time employment, the monthly gross allowance is capped between the unadapted social minimum wage and 5/3 of that wage (roughly between €2,570.93 and €4,284.88 gross per month, subject to current index updates). Part-time and split formats receive proportional amounts. Taxes and social security contributions are deducted, and pension rights continue to accrue.
