How the maisons relais and other education and care services (SEA) work, how to register your child, what it costs with the chèque-service accueil, and where to find homework help.
Between the end of lessons and the end of the working day, children in fundamental school are looked after in the maisons relais (also called foyers scolaires in some communes). These structures are part of the State-approved education and care services (SEA): lunch, educational activities, holiday care and homework help.
| Time slot | Usual offer |
|---|---|
| Morning before school | Early drop-off for working parents |
| Lunchtime | Supervised hot meal |
| After school | Activities, games, homework help |
| School holidays | Full-day care with an activity programme |
The cost depends on household income thanks to the chèque-service accueil (CSA), a State contribution system that sharply reduces families' bills. An important measure: during school weeks, care in maisons relais and main meals have become free of charge for fundamental-school children in State-contracted structures; a contribution remains due during holidays and for certain time slots. Exact amounts and rules are on guichet.public.lu.
Maisons relais apply the national homework help concept (Hausaufgabenhëllef): staff provide a quiet environment to encourage independent learning and liaise with teachers via the digital student planner (e-Bichelchen). In addition, free options exist: the cours d'appui (remedial classes) organised by schools, communal libraries, and local tutoring programs. For secondary pupils, lycées offer tutoring and the Centre psycho-social et d'accompagnement scolaires (CePAS) provides individual support.
Tip: if you have just arrived and your child speaks neither French nor German, tell the maison relais; the staff are used to linguistic diversity, and daily contact with other children is one of the best accelerators of integration.
For children aged 0 to 4, care is provided in a crèche, a mini-crèche or with an approved childminder (assistant parental), with the same chèque-service accueil mechanism. A free plurilingual education component (in Luxembourgish and French) is built into early childcare in State-contracted structures: a real asset in preparing for entry into cycle 1.
