The national railway CFL connects Luxembourg City to the whole country – free in 2nd class – and runs direct trains to Trier, Metz, Thionville, Arlon and beyond, with TGV connections to Paris.
The national railway company (CFL) operates a star-shaped network centred on Luxembourg City station. Within the country, 2nd-class journeys are free; across the border, CFL and its partners run frequent direct services to the Greater Region and connections to major capitals.
| Axis | Main destinations | Beyond the border |
|---|---|---|
| South | Bettembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette, Rodange, Differdange | Thionville, Metz, Nancy (France); Longwy |
| North | Mersch, Ettelbruck, Clervaux, Troisvierges | Liège (Belgium) via Gouvy |
| East | Wasserbillig | Trier, Koblenz (Germany) |
| West | Kleinbettingen | Arlon, Namur, Brussels (Belgium) |
| High speed | From Luxembourg City | Direct TGV to Paris (about 2 h 10) |
The main towns are linked to the capital by regular-interval trains, reinforced at peak hours. The network is complemented by RGTR buses and the tram, with interchange hubs such as Ettelbruck, Mersch, Bettembourg and Esch. Real-time timetables are available in the CFL app and on mobiliteit.lu.
Only the foreign portion of the journey is charged. Cross-border tickets can be bought in the CFL app, at counters or from machines. For Paris, TGV tickets should be booked in advance; for Brussels, Trier or Metz, direct regional trains run all day without reservation.
Tip: Luxembourg's main station is being modernised and the network keeps growing (new stops, tram to the Cloche d'Or and Findel airport). Check works information before weekend trips.
