Account maintenance, cards, transfers: banking fees vary widely in Luxembourg. Here is how they work and how residents can reduce them, including the right to a basic account.
Opening a bank account is one of the first steps after arriving in Luxembourg: you need one for your salary, rent and most administrative life. Banks are free to set their own tariffs, and the differences between institutions can be significant. Knowing what is typically charged, and what your rights are, helps you keep costs down.
| Fee type | What it covers | How to reduce it |
|---|---|---|
| Account maintenance | Monthly or annual charge for the current account | Compare packages; online-only accounts are often cheaper |
| Debit and credit cards | Annual card fees, sometimes per card type | Keep only the cards you use |
| Transfers | SEPA euro transfers within the EU must cost the same as domestic ones | Use online banking rather than paper orders |
| Cash withdrawals | Often free at your bank's ATMs, charged elsewhere | Withdraw at your own network |
| Non-euro payments | Exchange margins and fees abroad | Check the exchange conditions before travelling |
Under EU rules transposed into Luxembourg law, any consumer legally resident in the EU has the right to a basic payment account with essential services, even without income in Luxembourg. Banks must provide a standard fee information document so you can compare offers, and an annual statement of all fees charged. Mobile payment via apps such as Payconiq is widely accepted and generally free for consumers.
Switching banks is easier than it looks: the new bank can help transfer your standing orders and direct debits.
Beyond the headline fees, watch the small lines. Strong authentication through LuxTrust or the banks' own apps is usually included, but replacement tokens can be billed. Overdrafts carry high interest, so agree an authorised limit rather than slipping into an unauthorised one. Joint accounts, extra cards for family members and paper statements sent by post all have their own price. If you hold accounts in several banks, closing dormant ones avoids inactivity charges. Finally, the account switching service means your new bank contacts your old one, transfers standing orders and notifies your employer — so inertia should never be the reason you keep paying too much.
