If you lose your job in Luxembourg, acting fast with ADEM protects your income: the unemployment benefit can replace 80 to 85% of your former salary. Here is who qualifies, how much you get and the exact steps.
Losing a job is stressful, especially in a new country. The good news: Luxembourg's unemployment insurance is solid, and ADEM (Agence pour le développement de l'emploi) handles both benefit payments and help finding a new position. The key is to register quickly — benefits only start from your registration date.
Who is entitled to full unemployment benefit?
As a resident employee, you must in principle:
- be involuntarily unemployed (dismissal, end of fixed-term contract — resignation normally excludes entitlement, except for legally recognised valid reasons);
- have worked in Luxembourg for at least 26 weeks (182 days), averaging at least 16 hours per week, during the 12 months preceding registration;
- reside in Luxembourg at the time your contract ends, be aged 16 to 64, be fit for work and available for the labour market;
- register as a jobseeker with ADEM and submit a claim for unemployment benefit.
Cross-border workers who lose their job completely claim unemployment benefits in their country of residence, not in Luxembourg.
How much and for how long?
| Situation | Amount / Ceiling |
|---|
| Base benefit | 80 % of average gross salary of the previous 3 months |
| With dependent child(ren) | 85 % |
| Cap — first 6 months | 250 % of the social minimum wage |
| Cap — months 7 to 12 | 200 % of the social minimum wage |
| Cap — during extensions (50+ years, etc.) | 150 % of the social minimum wage |
| Duration | Equal to full months worked (up to 12 months in a 24-month period) |
Step by step after a dismissal
- Register as a jobseeker with ADEM — ideally the day after your contract ends. Online pre-registration via MyGuichet.lu is available.
- Submit your application for unemployment benefit with required documents: ID, dismissal letter or contract end proof, recent payslips, bank details.
- Respect your obligations: attend appointments with your ADEM advisor, apply for suitable jobs, declare any income or absence.
- Stay active in your search: ADEM assigns job offers and can propose training, employment measures or access to the JobBoard platform.
- Report any change (new job, illness, moving abroad) immediately to avoid repayment claims.
Missing appointments or refusing suitable jobs can lead to benefit suspension or revocation — take every ADEM convocation seriously.
