With more than a hundred castles and fortresses packed into a small territory, Luxembourg is a dream destination for history lovers. From majestic Vianden to romantic Beaufort, here is how to plan your castle tour.
Few countries pack as many castles per square kilometre as Luxembourg. Perched on rocky spurs, hidden in wooded valleys or standing at the heart of villages, they tell a thousand years of European history, from medieval counts to great Renaissance families. Good news for newcomers: most are reachable by car or by public transport — free within the country — and many can be visited all year round.
Vianden is the undisputed star. Carefully restored, this fortified castle overlooking the Our valley ranks among the largest fortified residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe. Victor Hugo, who stayed in Vianden, helped build its fame. Bourscheid, an imposing consolidated ruin on its promontory above the Sûre, offers one of the most spectacular panoramas of the Luxembourg Ardennes. Beaufort, in the Mullerthal region, charms visitors with its unique pairing: a medieval ruin standing next to a Renaissance château.
| Castle | Region | Not to be missed |
|---|---|---|
| Vianden | Éislek (Ardennes) | Restored halls, wall walk, chairlift with valley views |
| Bourscheid | Éislek | Panorama over the Sûre valley, audio-guided tour |
| Beaufort | Mullerthal | Medieval ruin and neighbouring Renaissance château |
| Clervaux | Éislek | The photographic exhibition 'The Family of Man', listed in UNESCO's Memory of the World register |
| Larochette | Mullerthal | Ruins overlooking a picturesque town |
| Useldange | Attert valley | Accessible educational trail |
West of the capital, the Eisch valley lines up seven castles — including Mersch, Hollenfels and the two castles of Ansembourg — along a well-known hiking route. It makes an excellent day trip, described in detail on visitluxembourg.com.
Many castles host seasonal events: medieval markets, concerts, night tours. Check the agenda on visitluxembourg.com to plan your visit around an event. And do not forget the capital's own fortress: the Bock casemates, remains of the former 'Gibraltar of the North', are the perfect complement to any castle tour — the old town and its fortifications are listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
