Rock labyrinths in Little Switzerland, wild ridges in the Ardennes and vineyard paths along the Moselle: Luxembourg offers hundreds of kilometres of signposted trails. Here is how to choose your route and prepare your first hikes.
It is easy to forget: behind the financial centre hides a little green paradise. Nearly a third of Luxembourg's territory is forested, and the country has developed a dense network of high-quality signposted trails. Three regions share the limelight: the Mullerthal in the east, the Éislek in the north and the Moselle valley in the south-east. All are reachable by free public transport, which makes hiking remarkably easy to organise.
The Mullerthal Trail is the country's flagship route: around 112 kilometres divided into three main loops, through a spectacular landscape of sandstone formations, mossy gorges, beech forests and streams. Famous spots such as the Schiessentümpel, a waterfall crossed by a stone bridge, have made it one of the most photographed trails in Europe. The trail is renowned for the quality of its waymarking and has received European hiking distinctions; practical details are on the region's official website.
In the north, the Luxembourg Ardennes offer rougher scenery: high plateaus, the deep valleys of the Our and the Sûre, and panoramas over the castles of Vianden, Bourscheid and Esch-sur-Sûre. Long-distance cross-border routes, such as the Escapardenne trails developed with Belgium, are known for their unspoilt character.
Along the German border, the Moselle unrolls its rolling hills and fruit orchards. The paths here are gentler, perfect for beginners: you walk through lush countryside, from one picturesque village to the next, with the option of finishing with a tasting of local fruit juice.
| Region | Landscape | Suggested level | Convenient starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mullerthal | Sandstone rocks, forests, waterfalls | Intermediate | Echternach or Berdorf |
| Éislek | Ridges, deep valleys, castles | Intermediate to sporty | Vianden, Clervaux, Esch-sur-Sûre |
| Moselle | Hillsides, riverbanks | Easy | Remich, Grevenmacher, Schengen |
The ideal season runs from April to October, but the autumn forests of the Mullerthal and the frosted ridges of the Éislek are also worth the trip in the off-season. For many residents, the Sunday hike is a ritual — one more reason to take it up as soon as you arrive.
