Since 1 March 2020, buses, trams and trains are free throughout Luxembourg for everyone, residents and visitors alike. Only first class on trains and cross-border segments still require a ticket.
Luxembourg is the first country in the world to have made all its public transport free, since 1 March 2020. No ticket, no pass, no validation: you get on and you travel. Free travel applies to everyone – residents, cross-border workers and tourists.

| Municipal buses (AVL in Luxembourg City, TICE in the South) | Yes |
| Luxembourg City tram | Yes |
| CFL trains in 2nd class, within the country | Yes |
| Funicular and public lifts (Pfaffenthal) | Yes |
| 1st class on CFL trains | No: ticket or season pass required |
| Cross-border journeys (to France, Belgium, Germany) | No: the foreign portion of the trip is charged |

No card is needed to travel within the country. To plan your journeys, the app and website mobiliteit.lu bring together timetables and routes of all operators in real time. Inspections remain in train 1st class and on cross-border journeys: keep your ticket in those cases.
Good to know: free travel also covers bicycles taken on trains (subject to available space) – handy for combining train and bike.
