From the giant funfair founded in 1340 to Easter markets, Luxembourg celebrates all year round. Here is the festival calendar every newcomer should pin on the fridge.
To understand a country, nothing beats its festivals. In Luxembourg they blend centuries-old traditions, the influence of immigrant communities and big popular gatherings. The most emblematic is without doubt the Schueberfouer, a huge funfair founded in 1340 by John the Blind, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia. Every year, from late August to early September, the Glacis field in Luxembourg City turns into a giant amusement park for around three weeks: Ferris wheels, thrill rides, lotteries and food stalls. Be sure to try the Fouerfësch (fried whiting) with chips — it is the local ritual. Practical information is published by the City of Luxembourg on vdl.lu.
| Period | Event | Place |
|---|---|---|
| February–March | Buergbrennen: great bonfires marking the end of winter | Villages across the country |
| Easter Monday | Éimaischen: popular market and Péckvillercher (terracotta whistling birds) | Luxembourg City and Nospelt |
| Spring | Octave: Marian pilgrimage and the Mäertchen (Octave market) | Cathedral and square in the capital |
| Whit Tuesday | Hopping procession of Echternach, inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage | Echternach |
| 22–23 June | National Day: torchlight procession, fireworks, Te Deum | Nationwide, especially the capital |
| Late August–early September | Schueberfouer | Glacis field, Luxembourg City |
| Autumn | Grape and harvest festivals | Moselle villages |
| Late November–January | Winterlights: Christmas markets and illuminations | Luxembourg City and municipalities |
These gatherings are much more than entertainment: they are moments when the whole country comes together, across all languages and origins. National Day, with its torchlight procession and fireworks over the old town, is probably the best moment of the year to feel Luxembourg's identity. The Moselle harvest festivals, meanwhile, offer a warm village atmosphere less than half an hour from the capital.
